Technology has become an indispensable part of our lives, and in fact we have become addicted to technology. This may give the impression that we are now in command of technology and science more than ever before. But how accurate is it? There is a danger pertinent to technology addiction: it may limit thinking, invention, and creativity, and eventually weaken the power of science and technology production. Thus, the mission of a faculty of engineering should be to transform our youth from technology users to technology creators in the vast ocean of technology. Engineers we foster must know that at least half of the knowledge and skills they need to create the mobile phone they hold in their hands actually rests in their own minds. Their grounded self-confidence and accumulation of knowledge is surely to make a difference in their future entrepreneurial pursuits and their accession to the academic world through scientific production. It should be known that behind every successful technological initiative lies individuals who have adopted accumulation of knowledge, hard work, and rational thinking as their primary principles. Contrary to popular thinking, “a good idea” is never enough to create a tech giant on its own. With these in mind, we teach our students that learning, questioning, and analyzing are the key modes of thinking. While we do that, we also prepare them as entrepreneurial engineers, help them be integrated with the industry, and discover our students who wish to pursue an academic career at an earlier stage to steer them to the right course.
